Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link (GMSL) SerDes ICs

Maxim Integrated’s Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link™ (GMSL) serializer and deserializers (SerDes) are high-speed communication ICs that fully support the high bandwidth, complex interconnect, and data integrity requirements needed to support evolving automotive infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

From the low-power requirements of cameras to the widely varying bandwidth of sensor data aggregation, Maxim Integrated’s GMSL™ SerDes ICs address the needs of future systems. Advanced link integrity and diagnostic capabilities enable a breakthrough in link performance monitoring—a vital capability to the design of automotive safety systems. Using shielded twisted pair (STP) or coax cables of up to 15 meters, Maxim Integrated’s GMSL SerDes ICs meet the most stringent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements of the automotive industry.

Spread-spectrum capability is built into each SerDes design to improve the electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance of the link, without the need for an external spread-spectrum clock. Interoperation of serializers and deserializers within the family allows the use of different interfaces at each end of the link. In addition to driving high-resolution central/rear-seat displays and instrument clusters, GMSL high-speed SerDes can also be used in megapixel camera systems.

Based on a foundation that pioneered many of the features seen in automotive video interconnect today, our GMSL SerDes technology offers the bandwidth, rich features, and flexibility needed to support the future of automotive design, including autonomous driving systems.

Applications

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

FPD-Link

https://www.ti.com/interface/high-speed-serdes/fpd-link-serdes/overview.html

Streamline design and delivery of high-resolution signals with FPD-Link™ serializers and deserializers for a variety of video interfaces across automotive systems, including cameras for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and infotainment displays. Our FPD-Link camera SerDes support uncompressed video, control and power over a single low-latency cable. Our FPD-Link display SerDes support full 1080p, 2k and 3k HD displays, and on-device HDCP keys while also providing adaptive equalization to compensate for cable aging and temperature changes.

Clockless Link

https://www.rohm.com/product-info/serdes-ics

Clockless Link SerDes IC is a differential interface IC that transmits serialized data in pairs utilizing ROHM’s transmission protocol.Single-pair transmission enables high-speed, long-range communication.Single-pair bidirectional transmission is also supported, enabling the use of coaxial and STP cables. This high-speed communication IC is ideal for automotive infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

AHDL

https://www.aimicron.com/

The intelligent vehicle real-time high-definition video transmission chip series is based on self-developed and innovative high-speed digital analog hybrid circuit technology and the AHDL (Automotive High-Definition Link) transmission and real-time bidirectional communication protocol with complete intellectual property rights. Its performance has surpassed the 4.5Gbit/s (Maxim/TI in the United States) of existing high-definition video transmission chips, reaching 6 Gbit/s. On this basis, further improvements will be made to the AHDL protocol, optimized channel algorithms and models, as well as digital analog hybrid circuit technology. The next generation of chips can achieve a single channel transmission bandwidth of 13-15Gbit/s and a dual channel transmission bandwidth of 26-30Gbit/s.

GVIF

https://www.sony-semicon.com/en/technology/automotive-if/index.html

The GVIF (Gigabit Video InterFace) is a digital video interface (SerDes) standard developed by Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation(SSS) that is capable of transmission with both coaxial and differential pairs. When it debuted in 1997, the multi-wire analog interface was still the mainstream, so the GVIF was sent out into the world as a revolutionary product capable of high-quality digital transmission of video with differential pairs only.

Thereafter, we began leading the industry, acting quickly to equip the device with a content protection function for the transmission of film content and other videos. Today it is widely used in applications such as automotive infotainment and ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems).

APIX2-APIX3

https://inova-semiconductors.de/apix-3.html

The third generation of APIX (APIX3) is targeted to address the enhanced requirements for Infotainment and Cockpit architectures in vehicles. Those architectures support multiple automotive UHD resolutions in car displays based on the most recent and future generations of high performance SoC.

The new APIX3 technology supports transmissions of up to 6 Gbps over one shielded twisted pair (STP) cable and up to 12 Gbps over a quad twisted pair (QTP) connection.   This is four times the speed of the previous APIX2 generation. APIX3 supports video with HD and Ultra HD displays.

APIX3 offers a number of unique features for in-car video, such as:

Enables the transmission of multiple video channels on one connection (which supports advanced cockpit architectures);

Supports 100 Mbps Ethernet and other serial interface protocols;

Provides advanced diagnostic capabilities, including cable monitoring, for preventative detection of cable degradation.

By supporting different cable media (such as STP, QTP and coaxial), APIX3 reduces the cost of cables to car manufacturers, OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. It provides scalable bandwidth, which means it can be used from entry-level to high-end systems.

ASA

https://auto-serdes.org/

The Automotive SerDes Alliance is a non-profit industry alliance of automotive technology providers collaborating to encourage standardizing of asymmetric SerDes technology.

A-PHY

https://www.mipi.org/specifications/a-phy

MIPI A-PHY (originally released to members in September 2020) is the first standardized, asymmetric, long-reach serializer-deserializer (SerDes) physical layer specification targeted for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous driving systems (ADS), in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) displays and other surround-sensor applications (e.g., cameras, lidar, radar).

A-PHY's primary mission is to transfer high-speed data between cameras and displays and their related ECUs.

A-PHY offers:

High reliability: Ultra-low packet error rate (PER) of less than 10-19 for unprecedented performance over the vehicle lifetime

High resiliency: Ultra-high immunity to EMI effects in demanding automotive conditions

Long reach: Up to 15 meters

High performance: Data rate as high as 16 Gbps with v1.0; up to 32 Gbps with support for Star Quad (STQ) cables in v1.1
